In this article, we are going to create some basic content, add a new user account, install a theme and Patchstack plugin.
Visit your /wp-admin, to see all the settings of your WordPress site.
From wp-admin, you can access all the administrative settings from the left hand menu.
Every WordPress site consists of:
- Posts (stored in database)
- Pages (stored in database)
- Plugin files
- Theme files
- Media files
Everything can be tweaked from this wp-admin dashboard.
Independent exercises:
Page creation
- Go to Pages, and rename “Sample Page” to “Homepage”
- Edit the contents of your home page. For example, add a heading “Welcome to my website”
- Create a page called “About”, and add your image there with some text
Install and configure a theme
- Install and activate a theme (for example “Astra”). For that, go to Appearance > Themes
- In Customizer, go to Homepage settings, and set Homepage to your home page, and set your “homepage displays” to “A static page”
- Go to Appearance > Customizer to change your site identity settings. Check all the settings, add site logo, change site title, etc.
- It’s good to independently explore each setting in the Astra theme settings
Menu handling
- In /wp-admin, go to Appearance > Menus; delete the automatically created menu, and create your own menu
- Add pages to it from the left panel
- Set this menu as your Primary menu (checkbox at the bottom)
Install Patchstack plugin
- Install Patchstack plugin and connect it with WordPress site (in Patchstack App, use testing@patchstack.com account for this. Password is in 1password environment)
- You can follow the guide, if you get stuck, but it’s better to try it independently
Create a new user
- Create a new user with Editor privileges and see what’s different between your administrator account and editor account
Result
Your site should look something like this, with custom logo, menu and couple of tweaks here and there.
It should be protected with Patchstack.
